![]() Even the flowers have too much selenium for regular consumption. The plant stores selenium from the soils it lives in, though more is concentrated in the leaves and roots than the flowers. The flowers of Indian paintbrush are edible, but eat too many and they can kill you. The leaves are narrower than the ‘flower’ bracts. Desert paintbrush plants are hairy and can look slightly grey/brown in color. The bracts of desert paintbrush can range from red, through orange to yellow. The showy ‘flower petals’ are actually 3 to 5 lobed bracts, the yellow green flower is tucked between the bracts. The paintbrush will eventually kill off the host plant by destroying its root systems, then will die itself. Desert paintbrush brightens up the sagebrush from April to June. ![]() The three-lobed, red- or orange-tipped bracts almost hide the small, two-lipped, green-yellow flowers. It attaches itself to the root systems of other plants in order to gain nutrients. The leaves are simple, entire or lobed and oblong or oval. The greenish yellow bracts along the uppermost few inches of the stems are divided into long, narrow lobes (3 to 5 of them) as are the light green leaves lower down. The other fascinating aspect of this plant is that it is parasitic. June to September Red is the usual color of paintbrush flowers, but castilleja flava is one of the few yellow species, and can sometimes be pale orange. Flowers: calyx 1423 mm long, primary clefts subequal to slightly deeper adjacent to the corolla lip than the back, lobes acute, 25 mm long corolla green to. These flowers have almost no scent (hummingbirds are attracted to red colours, not aroma), a long deep flower that hides its nectar, and tough flowers that can withstand hummingbird bill stabs. Some research suggests the two co-evolved. Growing 15 to 60 cm high, the flowers are borne in dense bracted spikes. Identification: With 6 different species in the area, they can be very hard to tell apart. Family: Scrophulariaceae or Figwort Family. The red ones are the primary food for hummingbirds in the area. Other Names: Grandmother's Hair, Common Red Paintbrush, Butterfly Weed, Prairie Fire, Painted Cup, Painted Lady. It is similar to the Stiff Yellow but much shorter. There’s even an Alpine Yellow paintbrush ( Castilleja occidentalis, below right) that is only found at higher elevations. You can find ones that are purple or pink ( Castilleja rhexiifolia, pictured at left) thought to be a cross-breed between Stiff Yellows and the Giant Reds. ![]() However, you can also find Stiff Yellow Indian Paintbrush ( Castilleja lutescens). The most common one here is the Giant Red indian paintbrush, Castilleja miniata, which ranges north to Alaska, south to New Mexico and east to Ontario. It is widespread and varieties can be found from the Andes to western North America to Asia and northwest Russia.
